MODEL MAMAS

Model Mamas

by REMA M. SMITH

Supermodel Beverly Johnson, the first woman of color to grace the cover of American Vogue (in August 1974), is all smiles in this photo with her mother, Gloria Johnson; her daughter, Anansa Sims; and her granddaughter, Ava Brielle Patterson. The apple didn’t fall far from the tree: Anansa also took to the catwalk, becoming a celebrated plus-size model. And though she surely passed along advice about the world of modeling, the star of Beverly’s Full House (a reality show in which Anansa, her husband and the baby moved into her home) told EBONY in May 2012, "You can’t tell them how [parenthood] is going to be; they have to experience it for themselves. She understands things a lot better now."
