The new film “Pariah” by breakthrough director, Dee Rees is receiving a lot of attention, specifically by cultural critic/filmmaker Nelson George. In a piece for The New York Times, George praises the film’s portrayal of a Black teenaged lesbian coming to terms with her identity against the backdrop of New York City life. Rees is one of the three emerging New York-based and Spike Lee-guided filmmakers praised for expanding the “complicated assumptions about what ‘Black film’ can be.” It’s exciting to see young directors question Hollywood’s antiquated ideals and changing the cinematic palette available to Black audiences.
