Italian Vogue is known as the top fashion magazine in the world for its high art and diversity in showcasing models and designers. It’s editor, Franca Sozzani, has also never been afraid of color, conceptualizing the ‘all Black’ July 2008 issue that sold so many copies it had to be printed twice.
Recently, at Diane von Furstenberg’s Fall 2012 show, Sozzani revealed that she and her team were working on another Black themed issue for May or June. The issue, which is likely to be as lucrative as the past one, is said to be “about people who are from Africa in a positive way.”
While Sozzani should be commended for highlighting models of color, one has to wonder why out of all the 18 national versions of Vogue there is not one single edition in the continent of Africa? If anything, shouldn’t demand draw attention to the underserved market?
