10-Day March Against White Supremacy Kicks Off In Charlottesville

In light of Donald Trump’s inaction surrounding the white supremacist rally that took place in Charlottesvile in early August, civil rights organizations assembled a 10-day march, which commenced on Monday. Protestors are insisting on Donald Tump’s removal from the White House and calling for action to be taken to combat white supremacy.

The demonstration kicked off in the Virginia city and will end in Washington D.C. with pit stops at confederate monuments during the approximately 112 mile demonstration. Among the groups who organized The March to Confront White Supremacy were Color of Change, The Women’s March on Washington and The Movement for Black Lives.

“We are marching from Charlottesville to Washington, D.C. to demonstrate our commitment to confronting white supremacy wherever it is found,” read the website for the march. “It’s clear that we can no longer wait for Donald Trump or any elected official to face reality and lead. We are coming together to reckon with America’s long history of white supremacy, so that we can begin to heal the wounds of our nation.”

Each day demonstrators will march 17 miles before resting at a nearby church. Students and activists of all racial backgrounds are participating in the march.

“This is the time for us to stand up for justice and equality,” the website continued. “This is the time to confront white supremacy in our government and throughout our history. We demand that President Trump be removed from office for allying himself with this ideology of hate and we demand an agenda that repairs the damage it’s done to our country and its people.”
