Harlem’s world famous Apollo Theater opened its doors to host the annual Ailey at the Apollo Gala this past May 6. Author Terry McMillan, poet Khephra Burns, former Alvin Ailey Dance Company director Judith Jamison, actor Michael Wright (The Five Heartbeats) and other luminaries showed up for the benefit—which raised over a million dollars for scholarships to The Ailey School.
Artistic director Robert Battle introduced performances by gifted youngsters of The Ailey School and the talents of both Ailey II and the Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater. (All three divisions of the Ailey organization had never before performed on one stage.)
DJ Kiss served up a scintillating turntable mix in a tent behind the famed Apollo Theater afterwards… and make no mistake: there’s no party like a dance theater company party!
