Camille Cosby has broken her silence in the wake of  her husband, Bill Cosby, being found guilty of drugging and sexually assaulting Temple University employee Andrea Constand. Mrs. Cosby said the conviction that could land the comedian in prison for the remainder of his life was a “tragedy” and an example of “mob justice, not real justice.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, Mrs.Cosby released a three-page statement in which she blasts the media and his accusers. She said Constand’s testimony during the trial was “riddled with innumerable, dishonest contradictions” and also accused the alleged victim of being a liar. The 74-year-old said the accusers were looking for a payout from her 80-year-old husband: “This is a homogeneous group of exploitive and corrupt people, whose primary purpose is to advance themselves professionally and economically at the expense of Mr. Cosby’s life.”

Mrs. Cosby also said, “The overall media, with their frenzied, relentless demonization of him and unquestioning acceptance of accusers’ allegations without any attendant proof, have superseded the Fifth and Fourteenth Amendments, which guarantee due process and equal protection, and thereby eliminated the possibility of a fair trial and unbiased jury. Bill Cosby was labelled as guilty because the media and accusers said so.”

Bill and Camille Cosby have been married since 1964, and she has remained by her husband’s side through all the allegations. In her statement, she compared her spouse’s guilty verdict to other moments in history when White women lied about Black men, including the death of Emmett Till. Till was a 14-year-old who was tortured and murdered for reportedly flirting with a White woman in Mississippi in 1955. His accuser admitted to lying that Till touched her in early 2017.
