Dr. Dre Is Releasing a New Album (For Real!)

Attention hip-hop fans of the past 15 years: Detox is (really) coming. I repeat: Dr. Dre’s Detox has a release date. Thing is, it’s not being called Detox. But who cares. Dr. Dre—the guy who made The Chronic—is dropping a new full-length album, son! And that’s really all that matters. He’s found the perfect vehicle too: the soundtrack of the N.W.A biopic, Straight Outta Compton.

Ice Cube announced the news on Philly’s Power 99 yesterday morning (July 29), saying the project will be released on August 1. (Rolling Stone reports that it’ll actually be available closer to the film’s Aug. 14 debut.) “It’s mega. It’s Dr. Dre, it’s what everybody’s been waiting for,” Cube said. “It’s definitely a dope record, and he’s dropping it all on the same day.”

Dre is expected to confirm the album on his Beats 1 radio show, The Pharmacy, this Saturday. There’s no word on whether it’ll include any traces of material once slated for Detox (honestly, what is Detox at this point?), but Kendrick Lamar and Eminem will reportedly be featured. Let this be a lesson to Meek Mill detractors that “better late than never” still applies in rap music.

Janet Jackson to Postpone Tour to Tend to Her Sick Dad

Sorry Janet Jackson fans: The long-awaited Unbreakable tour is going on hold. Ms. Jackson has suspended production on her highly anticipated live shows to be by the side of her dad, Joe Jackson, who suffered a stroke in Brazil on Sunday (July 26). The R&B and dance pop icon reportedly flew to her father via private jet and has no plans to resume rehearsal until his health improves. Get well soon, Joe.

Beyoncé Being Considered to Join The Wiz Live! Cast

Beyoncé might add some Black girl magic to The Wiz Live! musical. Jay Z’s wifey is reportedly being considered for the role of Glinda the Good Witch; if she takes the part, she’d play foil to Mary J. Blige’s Wicked Witch of the West, Evillene. But like a magical broomstick, the role is reportedly up in the air. Uzo Aduba, known on Orange Is the New Black as Crazy Eyes, is said to be in contention too. Lena Horne played the Good Witch in the iconic 1978 film adaptation, which also featured Michael Jackson and Diana Ross. As for The Wiz Live!, the play already has its share of star power, with Queen Latifah cast the Wizard. It debuts December 3 on NBC.
