HBO Orders Pilot For Issa Rae Comedy Series Called Insecure
After creating an Internet cult classic with The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl, Issa Rae is finally getting her own HBO pilot. The deal, originally announced in 2013, is for a comedy series pilot called Insecure, which shares some themes with the aforementioned ABG. Rae and Larry Wilmore co-created and wrote the show to focus on awkward experiences faced by a contemporary Black woman. There’s no word yet on when the show will debut.

Yeezy Season is approaching, and now there’s an actual clock ticking off its arrival. Kanye West has launched a mysterious site called Yeezy.Supply, with a real-time timer set to end in six days and five hours as of the time of this writing. It’s slated to stop on February 12 at 4pm EST. What exactly is it counting down to? Who knows? Could be a new single, surprise album, tour announcement, pop-up performance, or the debut of his collaboration with Adidas. Or something completely different. Guess we’ll have to see in a little under a week.
Taraji P. Henson Says Her Empire Character Was Inspired By Foxy Brown, Lil Kim
On Empire, no one wants to rumble with the baddest B—Taraji P. Henson’s character, Cookie. So it’s no surprise that the role was inspired by some of hip-hop’s toughest and sassiest ladies. In an interview with Vogue, Taraji said Cookie has roots in Foxy Brown, Salt-N-Pepa and Lil Kim. “Is she influenced by Foxy Brown? Certainly,” the 44-year-old actress says. “That’s where a lot of her style comes from—Salt-N-Pepa, all of that. That era of hip-hop was her heyday, those are the woman she identifies with.” She added the influence of rap’s original Queen Bee. “Kim is everything,” she says. “Today it’s Nicki Minaj, but Nicki Minaj got everything from Kim. Kim came on the scene and made everything change for women—she made it feminine and sexy and hardcore. She was a champion, and she’s certainly Cookie’s champion.”
