Rihanna took part in her homeland’s biggest celebration yesterday for Barbados’ annual Crop Over Festival. Dressed in a ceremonial costume that featured turquoise feathers and a matching headdress, Rih Rih honored the centuries-old tradition by twerking and wagging her tongue amongst her people. Over the years, Rihanna has increasingly brought attention to the festivities that mark the end of the sugarcane harvest season.
Drake Clowns Meek Mill With Memes at OVO Fest 6
Twitter TV was on a trilli last night, as Drake hosted his sixth annual OVO Fest and folks in Toronto and beyond watched via Instagram clips and social media commentary. Drake’s set kept his battle with Meek Mill raging on—he opened up with two of his new songs, “Charged Up” and “Back to Back (Freestyle).” As he performed the latter, viral memes poking fun at Meek played on a giant screen in the background, a 2015 update on the Hot 97 Summer Jam screen that Jay Z and 50 Cent have previously used to embarrass opponents. Drake brought out Kanye West, Skepta, Pharrell, Travi$ Scott, Big Sean and Future as surprise guests, fully commanding the night and reigning over his hometown concert. So is the battle over? Perhaps not yet. Drake teased a song called “3 Peat” that perhaps he may be keeping tucked away in case Meek Mill drops another dis.
Nipsey Hussle Disrespects Black Women, Then Apologizes
Nipsey Hussle learned the hard way that while jokes run rampant on the Internet, everything isn’t funny. Yesterday, the California lyricist interacted with a tweet from @1FLYMEXICAN that read “Bro I’m bout to start dating out my own race lmao.” His response: “I can’t retweet that but I’m LMAO TRU sh*t.” And suddenly, the boyfriend of Lauren London found his mentions were in shambles. In his defense, though, Neighborhood Nip cleaned up nicely, claiming his tweet, albeit in poor taste, was written in jest.
“In all honesty, I thought the people reading it would know by the outrageous nature of the comment & the laughing emojis… that he was joking,” the 29-year-old rapper wrote. “Never want to portray someone who thinks its cool to disrespect our mothers, sisters and more importantly our bacc bone [sic] as acceptable… Wrong is wrong and I’ll take responsibility and apologize to all my Black women that were offended by it. The comment I responded to was a JOKE made in bad taste by someone in my area known as a lighthearted comedian that loves to laugh.”
