Brooklyn Stand Up! Netflix’s ‘She’s Gotta Have It’ Just Dropped Its First Trailer

This Thanksgiving, She’s Gotta Have It will head to Netflix as a contemporary Brooklyn-set series with millennials at the center. Based on the 1986 film by famed director Spike Lee, She’s Gotta Have It stars DeWanda Wise as Nola Darling, an artist in her late 20s struggling to define herself and divide her time among her friends, her job and her lovers. Nola is simultaneously seeing three men: a cultured model, Greer Childs, played by Cleo Anthony; a protective investment banker, Jamie Overstreet, played by Lyriq Bent; and the da original b-boy sneakerhead, Mars Blackmon, played by Hamilton alum Anthony Ramos. Chyna Layne, Ilfenesh Hadera, Margot Bingham, Sydney Morton and Joie Lee also star. Lee directs all 10 episodes of the series, which he also created and produced. Tonya Lewis Lee serves as an executive producer.

Lee told EBONY.com, “When She’s Gotta Have It came out, there were people who said, ‘This is a stereotypical image of an oversexualized Black woman.’ Then, you had people saying Nola Darling was a feminist. So I think we’ll have the same types of reaction about who Nola is, and it will reflect the fact that there is not just one aspect of who a Black woman is.”

Lee shot the original film in just 12 days. At the time of its release, She’s Gotta Have It changed how Black people were portrayed in films, particularly when it came to the sexuality of Black women.

She’s Gotta Have It will drop all 10-episodes of the series on Thanksgiving Day, November 23, 2017.
