Oh, what a night! Who knew that in one instance we could be riding so high we’d be quoting historical figures, and in the next, become so emotional that tears were inevitable? Those were among the many stories of African-American performers at Sunday night’s 67th annual Emmy Awards.

Most would agree the highlight was Viola Davis becoming the first Black actress to take home an award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama Series for her performance on How to Get Away with Murder. In her speech, she related Harriet Tubman (who she’ll be portraying in an upcoming HBO biopic) to the work of Black woman performers.

But an easy runner-up to that moment would be Uzo Aduba’s Outstanding Supporting Actress win for Orange Is the New Black, in which she couldn’t stop the tears from flowing.
