Robin Roberts shocked many by announcing her rare disorder of myelodysplastic syndrome Monday on “Good Morning America.” The TV anchor overcame breast cancer five years ago and likely got the new sickness, of the blood and bone marrow, from her previous treatment. Almost immediately, celebrity friends and fans took to Twitter to show support for Roberts.

From Michelle Obama and Kerry Washington to Russell Simmons and Maria Shriver, a range of celebs tweeted words of encouragement. “My doctors tell me I’m going to beat this— and I know it’s true,” Roberts said in her statement. “If you Google MDS, you may find some scary stuff, including statistics that my doctors insist don’t apply to me. They say I’m younger and fitter than most people who confront this disease and will be cured.”

Roberts will undergo a transplant in the fall with bone marrow donated from her sister. She will begin chemotherapy immediately, but will continue to work until her transplant.
