The Wire creator David Simon is returning to HBO with The Deuce. Starring Gbenga Akinnagbe, whom you will certainly recognize as Chris Partlow from The WireThe Deuce will follow the rise of the the porn industry. Set in the ’70s The Deuce is the story of the legalization and subsequent rise of the porn industry in New York’s Times Square from the early 1970s through the mid-1980s, exploring the rough-and-tumble world at the pioneering moments of what would become the billion-dollar American sex industry.

The series is set to explore other themes as well including the violence of the drug epidemic and the resulting real estate booms and busts as well as the HIV epidemic that ravaged the world.

Akinnagbe won’t be the only name you’ll recognize from The Wire. Lawrence Gilliard Jr. will also join the ensemble cast as well as James Franco, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Tarik Trotter, Gary Carr, Natalie Paul, Dominique Fishback and Pernell Walker among others. The Deuce won’t be HBO’s first foray into the ’70s, Their short-lived Martin Scorsese-produced series Vinyl revolving around the New York music scene in the ’70s was a major disappointment to both fans and the network. However, knowing Simon’s track record with The Wire which is one of the most acclaimed television series of all time, we think The Deuce might get things right.

The Deuce will begin it’s eight-episode season one run on Sunday, September 10th at 9 PM ET.
