Lead singer of legendary Motown group The Temptations, Dennis Edwards, has passed away at the age of 74.

While the classic R&B group was formed in 1965, Edwards joined the fold in 1968 as the replacement for fired group member, David Ruffin. He went on to record several hits with the group, including “I Can’t Get Next to You,” “Ball of Confusion” and “Papa Was a Rollin’ Stone.”

His family confirmed the news of his passing to CBS News, saying he died in the city of Chicago without disclosing the exact cause.

Outside of the group, Edwards also landed a solo hit with “Don’t Look Any Further” in 1984. The song  went on to become one of the most sampled songs in hip hop, appearing in Eric B. and Rakim’s “Paid in Full,” 2Pac’s “Hit ‘Em Up” and Junior M.A.F.I.A.’s “Getting’ Money” with the Notorious B.I.G., according to Rolling Stone.
