Our church opened its doors on Easter in the Los Angeles neighborhood of North Hollywood, where I’ve had my music studio for 13 years. When I first got here there were a lot of drugs, gangs and even a crack house across the street. There was always so much craziness that I felt when God led me to become a licensed minister, he was leading me to start my ministry right there. So in 2013, Erica and I started a small Bible study at a local hotel, the Garland; eventually, we expanded it into the church we have today. Now [we meet] every Sunday at the James Madison Middle School on Hart Street. We could have gone anywhere, but [we stayed local because] there weren’t any churches in North Hollywood—it was a spiritually dry place. And so I said, “This must be our place.” I’m happy we chose it because, since we started, many people have come up to me and said, “I’m so glad you opened up a church here because I had nowhere else to go.”
