Janelle Monáe sat down with Ebro Darden of Hot97 to speak about Kanye West’s tweets and support of conservative commentator Candace Owens, her new album, sexuality and working with Prince.

Darden made the comparison between West and Monáe, and how they use their art to challenge mainstream thought. Darden feels that West is using his tweets as an attempt to challenge conventional thought through sociopolitics and that he often receives backlash for it. He wants to know how Monáe deals with that backlash or frustration to her art to which she said she tries to communicate messages differently.

When asked about West’s recent tweets about racism and slavery being used as a mental tool to make Black people embrace victimhood, Monáe said she did not agree with him. “I don’t agree with if that’s true and he’s supporting anybody who thinks that. I don’t agree with him at all,” Monáe said. “I believe in free thinking. I don’t believe in free thinking if it is rooted in or at the expense of the oppressed. If your free thinking is fueled by oppressors to continue to oppress Black people or minorities, I think it’s bulls**t.”

You can hear the “PYNK” singer’s take on West’s views at the 19:24 mark.
