Jay Z is on a mission to tell stories and stir conversations around events that deal with injustice as it relates to race and class. And through his first-look production deal with The Weinstein Company (TWC), he’s been doing just that.

The partnership first brought the weighted Time: The Kalief Browder Story, a six-part docu-series that chronicles Browder’s experience before, during and after his time on Riker’s Island, one of the world’s most dangerous prison complexes.

According to Variety, after a hot bidding war, Jay and TWC won the rights to two books about Trayvon Martin that will be developed into a series of film and television projects.

The books include Lisa Bloom’s Suspicion Nation: The Inside Story of the Trayvon Martin Injustice and Why We Continue to Repeat It, which recounts her experience covering the trial for NBC, that sparked the Black Lives Matter movement following the non-guilty verdict of George Zimmerman.

Rest in Power: The Enduring Life of Trayvon Martin comes from Martin’s parents and offers a more personal look in to Trayvon’s childhood and the aftermath of his death.

Adapting material from the literary works, the content creators are interested in developing a six-part docu-series produced by Jay Z and also a narrative feature film with TWC leading the charge on production.

Sybrina Fulton and Tracey Martin made it clear to both Jay Z and TWC that they were most concerned with seeing their son’s life and legacy honored.
