Kanye West believes that slavery was a choice.

The rapper stopped by the TMZ newsroom on Tuesday morning and made the controversial remarks, also talking about rappers loving Donald Trump before he became president.

“When you hear about slavery for 400 years. For 400 years? That sounds like a choice,” he said on TMZ Live. “We’re mentally imprisoned.”

West appeared on the show with conservative commentator Candace Owens, and one of the topics was “free thought.”

One of the TMZ staff members, Van Lathan, challenged West on his latest comments and told him there are consequences to the things he says.

“There is fact and real-world, real-life consequence behind everything you just said,” Lathan said. “While you are making music and being an artist . . . the rest of us in society have to deal with these threats to our lives. We have to deal with the marginalization that has come from the 400 years of slavery that you said for our people was a choice.”

West looked on while Lathan laid out why the rapper’s words hurt him.

“Frankly, I’m disappointed, I’m appalled and brother, I am unbelievably hurt by the fact that you have morphed into something, to me, that’s not real,” Lathan continued. “Bro, you gotta be responsible, man.”
