When production of the biopic based on the life of Nina Simone (starring Zoe Saldana and David Oyelowo) was first mentioned, controversy ensued. Many objected to having Saldana portray the legendary singer in what arguably amounts to blackface.
But whether you’re anticipating the film or not, Nina now has an official release date.
The film follows Simone’s life through her storied music career and through her years of civil rights activism. Nina is scheduled be released in theaters, Digital HD and Video on Demand on April 22, 2016.
