Reg E. Cathey, known for his roles in the hit Netflix drama House of Cards and the HBO series The Wire has died. He was 59. His death was announced Friday night by David Simon, the creator of The Wire, who acknowledged the award winner via Twitter.

Simone shared, “Not only a fine, masterful actor — but simply one of the most delightful human beings with whom I ever shared some long days on set. On wit alone, he could double any man over and leave him thinking. Reg, your memory is a great blessing.”

Netflix also issued a statement, saying employees were shocked and saddened by Cathey’s death. The respected thespian took home an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for House of Cards in 2015.   

“Reg was the kindest man, the most giving actor, a true gentlemen. Our sympathy goes to his family.”

“House of Cards” creator Beau Willimon also wrote a touching tribute to the star.

“Reg Cathey was one of a kind. Brimming with life force, generosity, humor, gravitas and a fountain of talent. Loved by everyone lucky enough know him and work with him. He will be greatly missed. Rest In Peace, Reg.”

Cathey’s exact cause of death has yet to be determined, but he was reported to have been battling lung cancer before his passing, according to The Jasmine Brand. Rest in peace.
