Regina Hall has just been cast in the film adaptation of Angie Thomas’ critically acclaimed book, The Hate U Give. The Black Lives Matter themed story follows 16-year-old Starr Carter, a Black high school student who navigates between the deeply impoverished neighborhood she grew up in and the upper-crust suburban prep school she attends. Her life is thrown into turmoil when she witnesses a white police officer shoot and kills her unarmed best friend, Khalil. Devastated and shaken, Starr is also the only one who knows what happened on that terrible night.

Hall will play Starr’s mother with the lead character being played by Amandla Stenberg. Russell Hornsby and Lamar Johnson will star as Starr’s father and brother respectively.

Shaken by the death of 22-year old Oscar Grant, Thomas began writing the novel student in Belhaven University’s creative writing program. When Thomas published the full-length novel earlier this year, it quickly climbed to the top of The New York Times best-sellers list.

Hall was last seen in the hit summer comedy, Girls Trip and will star opposite Marlon Wayans in the upcoming Netflix comedy, Naked.

The title comes from a tattoo worn by Tupac Shakur (the acronym T.H.U.G.).

There is no release date set for The Hate U Give.
