“God didn’t run my son down in the street and leave him to die. A MYAN did that!” Word. SEVEN SECONDS Premise: In an instant, life is forever changed for Brenton Butler and his family. After a white cop accidentally hits and critically injures a black teenager, a Northeastern City explodes with racial tensions, an attempted cover-up and its aftermath, and the trial of the century. Commentary: I used to scoff at artists who say things like film or music shapes the way people think and changes the world. I thought it was such self-important bullshit. But recent I watched the pilot for ‘Black Lightning’ and took a mental note of my anger at the actions of those scummy white policemen. Seeing this trailer again with the emotion it arouses, it’s dawning on me that these mediums of art do indeed influence society’s perspective as creators of content slowly and organically perpetuate a narrative of villainous cops. And I love that. Because if the justice system is ill-equipped with the virtuous fortitude to make authorities accountable by law, the artist isn’t. The pen is indeed mightier than the sword. And what socio-conscious art apparently does, is put the gun in the hand of the regular man and nudges him one shift at a time, to aim it in a direction he or she ordinarily wouldn’t. If law enforcement in America doesn’t reevaluate its policy of prejudice towards black men, and their rightful demonization via modern media continues, they will soon find themselves the very symbol of everything they’ve sworn to fight against. Seven Seconds is an upcoming original crime anthology series by Netflix. All its ten episodes premiere on February 23.
