Common and John Legend Win Best Original Song For Selma’s “Glory”

The Martin Luther King Jr. chronicle Selma was snubbed last night (January 11) at the Golden Globes, but the Ava DuVernay-directed film didn’t go completely unawarded. Common and John Legend took home the sole win of the film’s four nominations for Best Original Song (“Glory”), and they made the most of the moment. Prince presented the award, and the G.O.O.D. Music vets saluted the modern-day struggles for justice that made Selma so timely.

“I’m so honored to be a part of this amazing film that honors such amazing people that did great work and is so connected to what’s happening right now,” said Legend. “We still are in solidarity with those that are out there fighting for justice right now, and we’re so grateful to write this song hopefully as an inspiration to them.” Common, who also stars in the film, added: “Selma has awakened my humanity… We look to the future and we want to create a better world. Now is our time to change the world. Selma is now.”

Com and John were the only Black nominees to take home a trophy. Selma was also nominated for Best Director (DuVernay), Best Actor (David Oyelowo) and Best Picture. Meanwhile, Viola Davis (How to Get Away With Murder), Don Cheadle (House of Lies), Uzo Aduba (Orange Is The New Black), and Quvenzhané Wallis (Annie) also received nominations.
