Renowned for her powerful, monumental steel sculptures that address political themes linking her to her native land of Nigeria, sculptress Sokari Douglas Camp's effortless integration of African aesthetics is instinctive rather than driven by Picasso-inspired fascinations. Her latest sculptures (on view at the Stux Gallery in New York City until December 15) continue her provocative thesis with tender yet boldly visceral visions of the post-colonial world, and introduce the daily lives of African immigrants in the West as a new subject.
