The eclectic young rapper teams up with Rock band Maroon 5 for their new single, “Payphone”.

While Wiz is known to walk close to the curb with his flow and musical influence, this is one that most would not have seen coming.

Released earlier this week, Wiz and the popular band teamed up to create what seems to be a catchy and summertime fun duo. Oddly enough, this collaboration should not be much of a surprise, as many rap and even R&B stars have been crossing over to the pop- influenced music sound for the last few years now: Eve and Gwen Stefani, Kanye and Katy Perry, and most recently Nicki Minaj and Brittney Spears.

It seems as though both pop and R&B musicians have found a balance of borrowing the best from each other, and making it a win-win situation: pop music has the mainstream audience to bring in the dollars, and R&B/Hip-Hop brings the trends that young audiences jump to replicate at every given moment.

Regardless of anyone’s opinion, this may have been a good choice for Wiz and Maroon 5, seeing as though band front man, Adam Levigne is by far one of the most popular rock stars out, which can be attributed to his role as a judge on NBC’s “The Voice”.  Wiz, a young rapper who has been a part of the growing sub-genre of rap music, has his own alternative style that mellows out the pop sound.

Basically, at the end of the day, they both win.
