Michael Jackson, Xscape

Timbaland’s touch as lead producer on Michael Jackson’s Xscape was a good decision, but M. J.’s posthumous release is bittersweet. Bitter for obvious reasons, but sweet because it’s a solid project with a signature Michael Jackson sound. See “Slave to the Rhythm” (which channels 1997’s “Blood on the Dance Floor”), “Love Never Felt So Good” (which channels “Rock With You”) and “Loving You” (which channels “The Girl Is Mine,” but also sounds like a good fit on Invincible). They’re all perfect examples of why you’ll be able to get into this album, which seems to have something for King of Pop lovers everywhere.

Michael Jackson’s Xscape is available today. Check it out on iTunes.

Jazmine Sullivan ft. Meek Mill, “Dumb”

The melody is driven by a chorus of voices humming in the background and heavy drums, as Miss Sullivan sangs her heart out about an ungrateful lover stupid enough to take her for granted. “Now if my tears don’t mean nothing, don’t insult me with lies/And if you won’t ever change, please stop wasting my time/Cuz if you wanna go out and be single, go ’head/I told you want I want be cuz I know you gon’ miss me/So if you leave baby, you must be dumb,” she sings in her signature soulful, raspy voice. It’s a catchy empowering song strong enough to keep everyone excited about her return, with added power from Meek Mill’s verse.

Algebra Blessett, “Right Next to You”

“Right Next to You” is the second single released from Algebra Blesset’s current album, Recovery. The sentimental song was co-written and produced by Kwame Holland. The track is a lovely R&B-style tribute to being so in love that the only place you’d rather be is with the one you love. Blessett’s beautiful vocals take center stage, which is refreshing, because it’s obvious she can really sing and that her voice isn’t doctored.

KeKe Wyatt, Ke’Ke’ EP

The quirky R&B diva recently released this five-song EP where she sings about love (of course). Wyatt is typically known for her traditionally R&B sound, but she tapped into hip-hop with collaborations like “Rain” (featuring Pusha T) and “Remember” (which features Nitty Scott, MC). Overall, it’s a good five songs, so hopefully this means she’ll be releasing a full album soon.

Bradd Marquis, “Break Up”

When it comes to vocals, Bradd Marquis is making his R&B forefathers like Luther Vandross, Otis Redding and Sam Cooke proud. Here, the singer/songwriter/producer sings his heart out (along with Tess Henley) about the pain of breaking up. Anyone who’s ever broken up with someone—yes, you—can definitely relate. Catch this single on his latest album, Thank You.
