Welcome to the age of the millennial mommy! The twentysomethings who comprise the millennial generation have started approaching a major milestone in their lives: parenthood. And for most young adult parents, this step marks the beginning of a journey requiring a supreme amount of selflessness and sacrifice.

But with these new additions, will millennials’ social media habits shift? Might Twitter become less tantalizing? Or perhaps “insta” will morph into “lata”—after all, getting the perfect selfie might be difficult with a crying baby in hand.

Well fret not. As style-cum-mommy blogger Christina S. Brown has evidenced, social media and motherhood can coexist. She does both, well. Brown has chronicled her journey from pregnancy into motherhood on BabyBrownSugar (an offshoot of her lifestyle and fashion blog, LoveBrownSugar). Ultimately, BBS provides a space for readers to build community, as they experience the trials and triumphs of parenthood.

EBONY.com caught up with the style maven to discuss finding balance as a new mom, memorable motherhood moments, and how millennial mamas should empower themselves.

EBONY: You initially started blogging on LoveBrownSugar and you segued into BabyBrownSugar. How and why did you make the transition?

Christina Brown: For me it was a natural transition, to go from writing about my love for fashion and beauty—my journey to accepting myself and having confidence—to writing about my journey as a mom. I think that the two go hand-in-hand.

You go through so many changes when you become a mother, the whole process of pregnancy and giving birth. There are a lot of emotions that you go through, from anxiety to excitement. So I thought it was important to share that journey with my readers, the people who have been following me the longest. And it also gives me an opportunity to share with other moms, and people that are going through the same things.

EBONY: How has becoming a mom changed your life?

CB: It has changed my life so much, and obviously for the better. I feel like I have so much more drive and motivation to succeed and to do well because of my daughter. Getting up every morning and seeing her motivates me to do what I need to get done; I know that she is depending on me. I also have a greater appreciation of all of the sacrifices that my mother made for me. You don’t 100 percent understand what goes into being a mother until you become one yourself.

EBONY: How do you find balance as a new mother and a fabulous style blogger with a huge social media presence?

CB: It is very difficult to balance my career and trying to be fabulous all of the time with being a mom. There’s a fair-share of unfabulous moments when you are a mom. One of the mommy tips that I suggested in my Top 5 New Mommy Tips for My Black Is Beautiful is to ask for help. As mothers, we tend to think that we can do everything, but you can’t do everything. At the end of the day, if I have to go on a business trip or if I have a really important meeting and I have to take care of my daughter, but I can’t because of work, I have to depend on my village to help me. That’s a part of motherhood: being able to ask for help because you can’t do everything yourself.

EBONY: What are some of your most memorable mommy moments?

CB: The top mommy moment was when my daughter was born. It was such a special day for me. There was a rollercoaster of emotions, and it was a huge accomplishment for me to have pushed her out, and for the pregnancy to be over with.

Second to that would have to be her first birthday. So much goes into planning and executing a first birthday celebration. It was a celebration for me, because it marked my first year, officially, as a mother.

EBONY: A major theme on your blog is empowerment. How do you suggest that millennial mamas empower themselves?

CB: I think empowerment is about looking within yourself and just realizing how amazing you are. Whether it is embracing your differences and embracing what makes you beautiful, or it’s helping and empowering other people.

Say something positive about yourself on a daily basis. Find something beautiful about you for that day. Whether it’s that your eyebrows are on fleek, whatever it is. Find something positive to say about yourself.

Also, go to social media for inspiration. I love the My Black Is Beautiful Pampers & Dreft campaign, and the fact that they have the #MBIBMoms [hashtag]. I think it’s so important, because it helps empower other people to see that there are other moms out there doing their thing. It also provides an outlet for moms to encourage each other, and to leave positive comments and share stories. Social media can be a very positive tool to bring people together.
