For most Americans, summertime means carefree cookouts and celebrations featuring delicious and bountiful food. However, for the nearly 400,000 Americans who are on dialysis due to kidney failure, unique dietary restrictions limit their food and fluid options, and their ability to fully enjoy summertime meals.
To help them enjoy flavorful, healthy meals, Fresenius Medical Care North America (FMCNA), the nation’s leading network of dialysis facilities, initiated a partnership with celebrity Chef Aaron McCargo, Jr. In collaboration with FMCNA dietitians, Chef McCargo has developed the following smoothie recipe to help dialysis patients beat the heat and stick to their fluid restrictions.
Southern Comfort Chocolate Smoothie
- 2 scoops chocolate-flavored whey protein
- 2 cups ice
- 2 tablespoons Southern Comfort liqueur (optional)
- 1/2 cup evaporated milk
- 1/4 cup condensed milk
- 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
- Pinch of nutmeg
Mix all ingredients in blender on high until smooth, approximately 1-2 minutes. Top with whipped cream and sprinkle with cinnamon to garnish. Makes four 6-ounce servings.
