It’s always good to reflect on where you’ve been, where you come from, and where you’re going. And megastar singer-songwriter Solange Knowles is doing just that.

In a raw letter to her younger self published for Teen Vogue, the “Seat At The Table” star looked back on the “fear” and “triumph” during her journey to self-understanding and reflected on the moment when she became a teen mom.

“Seventeen will be the hardest year of your life,” Solange wrote. “It will grow you up almost immediately. You will lose your best friend whom you love so much to gun violence in a single moment, and give birth to a new one within a year.”

In 2004, Solange lost her best friend, Marsai Song, in a drive-by shooting after she was hit by a stray bullet. She welcome her son, Daniel Julez, now 12, in October of that year.

“Some people will count you out because of the decision you’ve made to bring another life into the world so young, but you made the decision out of love and will live with the decision in love.”

Solange is also very reassuring in her letter. She reminds her younger self that the unknown is nothing to fear.

“It’s OK that you don’t know what the future holds.”
