With the divorce rate as high as it is, calling it quits in a marriage has never been easier or more acceptable.

For years, Richard and Keri Evans struggled with their marriage. According to NBC, they were on the brink of ending thing, but that was until they decided to ask each other one simple question: How can I make your day better?”

The Salt Lake City couple got married when they were 21 years old, and according to Evans, the two had unrealistic expectation about the commitment they had signed up for.

“I loved her, I knew I loved her, she loved me,” Evans said. “We just didn’t know how to make it work.”

One day Evans decided that after years of struggling, he could change himself. And it started with one simple question.

“How can I make your day better?”

“It was a matter of humility,” says Evans, 55. “It was a matter of saying ‘OK, I will do whatever it takes to make this work.’”

He says his wife was hesitant to believe he was sincere initially, so as a test she told him to clean the kitchen. He did and asked her the same question the next morning. She responded by telling him to clean the garage. He did that too.

Evans asked his wife the next day and she told him there was nothing he could do. But for two weeks straight, he asked his wife, “How can I make your day better?”

Finally, she broke down.

“I should be asking you that,” she said. After apologizing, she then asked, “Can we maybe just spend time together?”

Now, every morning, the pair ask each other that same question, according to Evans who said the questions has “absolutely” improved their relationship.

“As soon as the trust was there, she realized, ‘He really likes me. He’s getting nothing out of this. He really wants this,'” Evans said. “There’s no ulterior motive, he’s trying to save our marriage, he’s trying to show me he loves me, he cares about me, he’s taking care of me.'”

Beautiful.
