In 2015, Buzzfeed News launched a series of investigative reports into America’s largest for-profit foster company The Mentor Network.

During the investigation, they found 94 children died under Mentor’s supervision between 2005 and 2017. The Buzzfeed series led to to a company probe by the US Senate and Finance Committee. The government officials claimed Mentor lied about death rates during the investigation by saying the number of fatalities was in line with those of other foster care institutions — yet it was 43% higher than the national average.

Between 2005 and 2014, 86 children died under Mentor’s care but the firm only investigated 13 of those deaths. In light of the Mentor probe, Sen. Orrin Hatch (R-UT) proposed legislation which would mandate foster care establishments to share information about who they allow to take children into custody. Hatch’s fellow U.S. Sen. Ron Wyden who worked with him on the bill, found that 1,600 foster children die annually from abuse and neglect.
