A Black Lives Matter activist who was well known for his history as a leader in the movement fatally shot himself on the steps of the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus Monday evening, police say.

MarShawn McCarrel II, 23, was pronounced dead at the scene after the Columbus Dispatch reported. Authorities  say it is unclear what prompted the suicide and no note was left explaining why.

“We don’t have any evidence to know why he did it,” said Lt. Craig Cvetan of the Ohio State Highway Patrol. Police say nobody saw him pull the trigger on himself, but he was seen on the Statehouse grounds just before the shooting.

However, just hours before his death, McCarrel posted a note indicating something severe was affecting him, possibly depression.

My demons won today. I’m sorry.

Just last Friday, McCarrel was honored as a Hometown Hero Award at the NAACP Image Awards for his community project Pursuing Our Dreams. The project sponsored mentorships at recreation centers around Columbus. A subsequent project, Feed the Streets, distributed lunches to those in need once a month.

“I wanted to do something that was youth-led, something that shows leadership and shows people that we’re here, we care, and we know,” he told 614 Columbus magazine.
