The re-release of the retro Nike Air Jordan Concord sneakers caused pandemonium, but thankfully, it wasn’t enough to kill a teen—despite rampant rumors to the contrary. Social media sites and blogs reported that 18-year-old Tyreek Amir Jacobs of Maryland had been killed over the shoes; even passing around what was later revealed to be a stock photo of a British teen with fake birth and death dates. Although police did find disturbances over the $180 sneakers, there have been no deaths or serious injuries reported. Consumerism is American as apple pie, so its interesting to see how the Condor-mania was sensationalized as if it were some sort of uniquely Black phenomenon. Considering that people of all races have gone crazy for Black Friday deals, iPads, Tickle Me Elmo, etc…how is our people’s over-enthusiasm for sneakers any different?
