A former cop who worked as a security guard for the Parkland high school that was massacred last week has resigned.

The New York Daily News reports Scott Peterson, who was armed during the time of the Feb. 14 shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas remained outside as the students he was hired to protect were being killed by 19-year-old Nikolas Cruz. Peterson, who’s worked for the school since 2009, chose to do absolutely nothing for four of the six minutes Cruz fatally shot 17 of his former peers and injured countless others.

“Devastated, sick to my stomach, there are no words,” Broward County Sheriff Scott Israel said of his reaction upon seeing video of the Peterson in a state of inaction during the massacre. “What I saw was a deputy arrive at the West side of building 12, take up a position and he never went in.”

“These families lost their children, we lost coaches,” Israel continued. “I’ve been to the funerals. I’ve been to the homes where they’re sitting shiva. I’ve been to the vigils. It’s just, there are no words.”

Peterson resigned on Thursday and has been banned from all sheriff office facilities.
