A well-known Black Lives Matter activist was fatally shot in New Orleans early Tuesday morning.

Muhiyidin Moye, who was also known as Muhiyidin d’Baha, was the subject of a viral video last February when the South Carolina Secessionist Party gathered to protest an event honoring activist Bree Newsome. In the widely circulated 2016 video, the 32-year-old was seen grabbing a confederate flag being paraded around by one of the protesters.

Moye was shot by an unidentified person as he was riding his bike around 1 AM on Tuesday. He rode five blocks to seek help. He died shortly after being transported to a hospital. The GoFundMe page created by Moye’s niece said he died of excessive blood loss.

Moye was also a close friend of the family of Walter Scott, an unarmed Black motorist killed by police in 2015.

“I thank God for placing him here to be the soldier that he is, that he was,” Walter Scott’s brother, Anthony Scott told WCSC about Moye.
