An Ashburn, Virginia, server was refused a tip despite providing “great service” due to the color of her skin.

According to WTOPa couple that was dining at Anita’s New Mexico Style Cafe, left no tip on a $30.52 bill Saturday. Instead, the words, “great service don’t tip Black people” were scrawled on the bottom of the check.

“I looked at the receipt three times,” said Kelly Carter, an African-American waitress who served the couple during brunch on Saturday morning.

Carter, along with Anita’s President, Thomas Tellez, said there was no indication the couple was dissatisfied with the food or service during the visit.

“I was appalled, though it’s kind of in line with the political landscape, unfortunately,” said Tellez.

Tellez said Carter, who has worked at the restaurant for years, has been a good employee. She has even developed a following among customers. Carter said she will not be deterred by the experience and said she would serve the couple if they returned to the establishment.

“I keep my head up. I have to keep moving,” Carter said. “One hateful remark can not stop me.”
