Racism is alive and well and while many of us continue to push through and advocate for fairness and equality, one woman has found a very unconventional way to combat racism.

During a recent episode of HBO’s Vice News, Andrea X explained how her way of combating racism has been effective.

“Every time I have a conversation with [a white person], I just pick up on certain things that they say, I pick up on the microaggressions, the passive aggressiveness, I pick up on it,” she explained to Essence. “So, I decided one day to just eliminate white people from my personal life, and ever since then, my life has been way more breezy.”

In 2014, Andrea X moved to Costa Rica and currently runs the Women of Color Healing Retreat. The getaway prioritizes self-care for Black women. During the gathering, which last about 10 days, the women practice yoga, surfing, hiking and communing with each other. They also consume vegan food.

“We also want to make it clear that Black women + people need spaces to heal, to be able to speak their minds and to just be. there are a lot of people who don’t understand the #necessity of these spaces and that’s okay because it is not for those people,” Andrea explained.
