Cyntoia Brown’s appeal in January was rejected last week. If you recall, Brown had the support of everyone from Rihanna to Kim Kardashian when her story went viral, after Brown, a  teen sex-traffic victim, killed her “John.” Her legal team had challenged her sentence, which was handed down for the death of a 43-year-old man she killed in 2004. The man reportedly solicited her for sex; she was 16 years old at the time.

According to Vibe, Brown, 29, was convicted of first-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison. She won’t be eligible for parole until she’s 67.

Brown, who has an overwhelming amount of support from activists, celebrities and citizens alike, reportedly thought the man was reaching for a gun, and she reacted in a manner to defend herself. She’s being held at a facility in Tennessee, and while it’s unconstitutional to imprison someone for killing in defense of human rights, the state is holding her for another reason.

According to prosecutors, Brown killed the man to rob him.
