A high school student in Florida was told to cover her nipples with a band-aid because it was seen as a distraction to other students.

Last week, Lizzy Martinez, 17, chose not to wear a bra underneath her gray-long sleeve shirt at Braden River High School where school officials felt she was receiving a lot of stares, according to The Bradenton Herald.

Martinez said she felt like she bullied by other students when School Dean Violeta Velazquez called her into her office and told her that she needed to address the fact that she did not wear a bra.

“She told me that I needed to put a shirt on under my long-sleeve shirt to try to tighten my breasts — to constrict them,” Martinez told the Bradenton Herald. “And then she asked me to move around.”

Martinez said that the second shirt did not help and was then instructed by the school nurse to apply bandages to her nipples which left her emotional.

The school district admitted that while officials did not handle Martinez’s situation properly, they were only trying to enforce the dress code.

“This matter was brought to the attention of the Superintendent’s Office for review,” the district’s general counsel, Mitchell Teitelbaum, said in a prepared statement to the Herald. “It is undisputed that this matter should have been handled differently at the school level and corrective measures have been taken to prevent a reoccurrence in the way these matters will be addressed in the future.”

The school’s dress code does not specify students have to wear bras, but “expected to dress appropriately for school and for the business of learning with proper attention given to personal cleanliness, grooming and neatness,” according to the report.
