In 2012, rich conservatives spent billions of dollars in order to defeat Barack Obama, and if that didn't work at least a bunch of Democratic congressional candidates. It was a stunning waste of money: Mitt Romney conceded before midnight and Republicans lost eight seats in the House and two in the Senate. But they aren't stopping anytime soon.
Today, the Koch brothers — whose Americans For Prosperity poured $122 million down the drain in 2012 — announced they will be rolling out attack ads targeting three senators who voted for Obamacare: Jeanne Shaheen of New Hampshire, Kay Hagan of North Carolina and Mary Landrieu of Louisiana. According to Americans For Prosperity, the ad campaign will total seven figures. This comes on the heels of a similar ad campaign in November.
Of course, this is play money for two of the 10 richest people in the world. So maybe it doesn't matter that their strategy is likely to be as effective as literally lighting the cash on fire. The new ad campaign focuses on the sloppy initial rollout of Obamacare, including some consumers having their existing plans cancelled despite Obama's claim that any plan could be kept. The problem was quickly remedied, and naturally it turned out that some insurance companies were duping their customers in the first place.
