A Black woman was nominated to be brigadier general of the Marine Corps on Tuesday, the Marine Corps office of public affairs revealed.

Secretary of Defense James Mattis announced that Marine Corps Col. Lorna M. Mahlock, who serves as Deputy director of operations, plans, policies, and operations at the Marine Corps headquarters in Washington, would be the first Black woman to fill the post, ABC News reports.

In her current role, she oversees 400 marines and manages $60 million in commercial network and satellite equipment in 15 countries, according to Black Enterprise.

Out of the four branches of the military, the Marine Corps has the fewest female service members with women making up 8 percent of its ranks, according to ABC News.

In 2015, the Pentagon made all combat jobs available to women, per reports.
