On Tuesday, the Justice Department announced that there was insufficient evidence to pursue federal criminal civil rights charges against former Milwaukee Police Officer Christopher Manney for the death of a mentally ill man in April 2014.
Dontre Hamilton, 31, died on April 30 after being fatally shot during an altercation with Manney.
Hamilton suffered from schizophrenia, but his family said he was not dangerous.
A press release from the Justice Department said that federal authorities conducted “a comprehensive and independent review of the evidence collected related to the death of Hamilton.”
The investigation included reviewing of all information from the state investigation, recorded interviews, consulting with the Milwaukee County medical examiner and reviewing the transcripts from Manney’s termination hearing by the Milwaukee Fire and Police Commission.
