It’s been almost a year since former President Barack Obama left the White House, but he hasn’t left politics.

The New York Times reports that America’s 44th commander in chief hit the campaign trail on Thursday in an effort to rally Black voters. His aim: to get them to vote for Democrats running for office in New Jersey and Virginia.

Election Day is only three weeks away and Obama’s actions are to prevent a low Black-voter turnout. He will appear on behalf of Virginia’s lieutenant governor, Ralph S. Northam, in Richmond and financier Philip D. Murphy in Newark.

Both Democratic candidates are White and are seeking to govern predominantly African-American cities. Murphy appears to have a comfortable lead in New Jersey, but the race in Virginia is close.

Virginia NAACP President Phillip E. Thompson expressed concern about Black voters not being engaged enough to show up to the polls.

“I’m just not getting the vibe on it,” he said. “Not at all.”

In the final weeks of the race, Northam has pushed to garner support from Black voters by frequenting churches and campaigning with both former Attorney General Eric Holder in addition to Obama.
