Medical professionals in Ghana are warning pregnant women not to take pills to lighten their unborn child’s skin, according to BBC Africa.
Ghana’s Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) says women are using Glutathione, an illegal pill to alter the child’s pigment.
The agency warned that “no product has been approved by the FDA in the form of a tablet to lighten the skin of the unborn child” and that it’s dangerous.
The drug can also cause birth defects and damage internal organs, according to the report.
Ghana’s FDA said the pills enter the country illegally by being placed inside large luggage at airports.
