President Donald Trump’s lead attorney in the Russia inquiry resigned on Thursday, sources told The New York Times

John Dowd, who joined the president’s legal team last summer, left because Trump repeatedly ignored his advice on how to handle the Robert Mueller investigation, according to the report.

Mueller was brought on as special counsel to look into Russia’s role in the 2016 presidential election and if there were ties between Russia and members of Trump’s associates.

Dowd had reportedly considered leaving Trump’s legal team before his resignation.

Over the weekend, Dowd said that he wanted the U.S. Justice Department to end the special counsel investigation and that he was speaking on behalf of Trump; he later backtracked. The president is said to be happy that Dowd handed in his resignation.

Trump had been calling for the end of the investigation and has insisted there was “no collusion”  between his team and Russia.
