Bernie-Sanders supported politician Randall Woodfin on Tuesday was elected mayor of Birmingham, Ala. The 36-year-old will be the youngest person elected to the prestigious position in the city in over a century.

Woodfin, who garnered 58 percent of votes, will replace two-term Democratic incumbent William Bell. Though the newly elected mayor formerly served as the Alabama state director for previous Secretary of State Hillary Clinton during the 2016 election, he was endorsed by former progressive presidential candidate Bernie Sanders.

Given the platform of the city prosecutor, Sanders’ backing doesn’t come as much of a surprise.

Among Woodfin’s plans are tuition-free community colleges and raising the minimum wage to $15— both of which echo Sanders’ presidential campaign.

He also received the support of former Ohio State Sen. and founder of liberal organization Our Revolution Nina Turner.

Some view Woodfin’s victory, given his progressive platform, as a sign of an evolving political climate.
