With each passing day, it becomes increasingly difficult not to pity former Ravens linebacker Ray Lewis. After denouncing Colin Kaepernick’s protest against police brutality, Black Twitter quickly called Lewis out when he seemingly took part in the movement propelled by the former San Francisco 49ers quarterback on Sunday.

But Lewis claims he was praying. Yup. He chose the day on which NFL athletes nationwide were protesting President Donald Trump to call out to the Lord. With all of Lewis’ recent antics, it’s a fitting time to recollect just how he embarked upon this sad path.

July 31, 2017: On an episode of Fox Sports’ Undisputed with fellow former Baltimore Ravens player Shannon Sharpe, Lewis was questioned about his opinion on Kaepernick’s protest. Among Lewis’ reasons for disagreeing with the former quarterback’s protest was that the NFL isn’t obligated to care about police brutality.

Aug. 1, 2017: Lewis played himself by believing he was giving Kaepernick sound advice when he suggested the free agent keep his politics off the field and let his “play speak for itself” in a video posted to Twitter.

Aug. 2, 2017: Kaepernick’s girlfriend Nessa Diab created a vivid comparison between the retired athlete and the Uncle Tom figure from Django Unchained in response to Lewis’ message for her bae.

Sept. 5, 2017: Lewis alleges the aforementioned post is the singular reason the Baltimore Ravens, who were considering signing Kaepernick, ultimately opted not to employ the blackballed athlete.

Sept. 24, 2017: Despite Lewis’ conviction that players should keep their politics separate from sports, the 42-year-old nonetheless kneeled alongside the Baltimore Ravens as they advocated for their freedom of speech by refusing to stand during the national anthem.

Sept. 26, 2017: On Showtime’s Inside the NFL on Tuesday, Lewis said he wasn’t protesting

. . he was praying.

“I didn’t drop on one knee in order to protest. … I dropped on two knees – both knees – so I can simply honor God in the midst of chaos,” he said.

Sept. 28, 2017: The petition calling for the removal of Lewis’ statue from the Ravens stadium, created in response to his seeming participation in the #taketheknee protest, reaches over 57,000 signatures. In light of the petition, the stadium has placed additional security guards near the statue.

Consider it wishful thinking, but we want to tell ourselves Lewis was also asking the higher power for some guidance because homeboy is lost in the sauce.
