The statue of a 19th-century obstetrician known as the “father of gynecology” was removed from its Central Park location on Tuesday.

New York City’s Public Design Commission voted on Monday to remove the statue of Dr. J. Marion Sims, according to ABC 7.

Sims was celebrated for his work that lead to a cure for fistula, a condition caused by continued obstructed childbirth.

He conducted his experiments on enslaved black women without anesthesia in his search for a cure.

The statue was moved to Green-Wood Cemetery in Brooklyn, NY where Sims is buried.
