A North Carolina A&T University football player, Jermane Clark, was shot and killed last Tuesday night. Clark, who was a sophomore psychology major, was found on the street just west of the University. According to WXII 12, the shooting happened in the process of Clark getting robbed by two men. Currently, the Greensboro police department have two men in custody who are charged with first-degree murder and armed robbery. According to HBCU Gameday, Jermane Clark, who played as a linebacker on the football team, is the third HBCU athlete to be killed just this year.

South Carolina State University was approved for the $6 million loan Governor Nikki Haley proposed about two weeks ago. The loan is to help SCSU stabilize its finances and cover some of the $13.6 million dollar deficit. While more money will be needed to help SCSU get out of debt, this is a first step as the school currently only has $1.5 million in the bank, which isn’t enough to pay its employees. But, the $6 million does come with some stipulations. South Carolina State must provide the state with audited financial statements for the next three years, hire a financial consultant and repay the loan within the next year. The University must also use the loan to first pay its bond debt, then payroll for employees and then other outstanding bills.

Texas Southern University has seen a 10% drop in enrollment, leaving TSU with 7,744 students and a $7 million dollar shortfall. TSU would need to gain 300 to 400 students for the enrollment budget gap to close. According to the Houston Chronicle, the enrollment has less to do with TSU’s financial state and more to do with the government limiting the amount to financial aid to college students. Currently, 85% of TSU’s students depend on financial aid.
