A look at the (MAJOR) political week that was:

  • President Obama was re-elected Tuesday night beating Mitt Romney in an electoral college/popular vote rout, even though they were still counting votes in Florida at press time. In a great twist of irony, the country doesn’t care about who wins the state because the outcome there won’t impact the election like in 2000…but it looks like the POTUS took it.
  • The POTUS’ victory speech was one of the best he has ever given and brought out shades of 2008 candidate Obama.
  • With an Obama win comes the permanence of his signature legislative achievement, Obamacare.
  • Tuesday night was also a huge night for supporters of marriage equalityMaryland and Maine approved ballot measures in support of marriage rights for gay couples and in Minnesota voter rejected a gay marriage ban.
  • There are more woman in the U.S. Senate than ever before.
  • Wisconsin elected Tammy Baldwin the first ever openly gay Senator.
  • Hawaii elected the first ever Asian American to the Senate, Mazie Horono.
  • Elizabeth Warren is a Senator which is a huge success for progressives.  Big banks that wrecked the economy should start running scared now.
  • Both rape apologist candidates on the Republican side, Todd Akin and Richard Mourdock, lost their senate races Tuesday night.
  • Black voter turnout went up, youth voter turnout went up, and Hispanic turnout went up.  All three groups overwhelmingly supported the president and were crucial in his victory.
